SiS Launches Latest WLAN Solutions-SiS163 and 163U

Taipei, March 18, 2004 – Silicon Integrated Systems Corp. (SiS), a leading supplier of core logic chipsets, today announced the launch of its newest single-chip Medium Access Controller (MAC) and Baseband Processors (BBP), the SiS163 and 163U. The SiS163/163U have been updated to the latest IEEE 802.11g standard, which promises to deliver data 5 times faster than the 802.11b standard, for lightning fast wireless connections and uninterrupted data flow across a variety of networks.

"At SiS, we believe the potential of Consumer and Computer technologies will be fully realized through the power of wireless LAN technologies. SiS has invested considerable resources into developing WLAN technology that keeps people in touch wherever they are," said Michael Chen, President and CEO of SiS. "With extensive experience making complete WLAN solutions for PC and notebook, SiS aims to become the leader in WLAN technology in both the Computer and Consumer technology product markets."

The SiS163U is based on the proven design of the SiS162U WLAN controller, which revolutionized WLAN by being the first WLAN controller with a built-in USB 2.0 interface. In response to market demand, we have designed the USB 2.0 interface as an optional feature included in the SiS163U. Due to our success with implementing the only industry-wide successful WLAN chip with a USB 2.0 interface, customers can be assured that the SiS163U solution will be the most reliable and stable on the market. Moreover, the SiS163 supports the Compact Flash 1.4 interface, a widely adopted standard in consumer technology products, such as digital cameras, PDAs and the upcoming "smart phones".

The SiS163/163U use a smaller form-factor hardware circuit layout to effectively reduce the cost of BOM and the footprint area on the PCB. As well, the SiS163/163U do not require additional Flash or SRAM, minimizing the mass and weight of the entire module, and are the lightest and most compact wireless chipsets available on the market. This has enormous benefits for mobile customers, where space and power consumption are a priority: this was achieved through the implementation of an asynchronous architecture design in TX (transceiver mode) and RX (receiver mode).

The hardware circuit engine of the SiS163/163U supports 64-/128-bit WEP/WPA 2.0 encryption coding for the IEEE 802.11i standard to provide exceptional data security capacity, which has been implemented through a hardware design that yields far better performance than a comparable solution using software. In addition, SiS163/163U meet the requirements of FCC, Wi-Fi and WHQL. The SiS163/163U also support the IEEE 802.11e Quality of Service standard, meaning those who use wireless services such as Video on Demand and VOIP will enjoy uninterrupted high quality data flow.

Besides providing NDIS drivers (such as Win9x/ME/2000/XP/NT 4.0), diagnostic programs and EEPROM setup tools for the SiS163/163U, SiS also supports the Linux, WinCE 4.2, and WinCE .NET environments. In addition, the SiS163/163U are ready with the latest AMD Athlon64 drivers to deliver exceptional 64-bit performance for both hardware and software. To help its clients with the process of mass production, SiS also offers a complete testing package, user configuration software, onsite inspection tools and specific customize software. With a complete package of support, the SiS163/163U feature the best support services of any WLAN solution provider.
